To the Membership,
The Contracting Out language was once mentioned as a “substantial right” that the Union had bargained into the CBA over 28 years ago. Without it, many of us wouldn’t have our jobs today! For over three years, we have been fighting against the Company and what their "new" interpretation of old language was. We tried to help them learn, and as time progressed, their "new" interpretation fell further and further away, as they "just didn't like the language" and "didn't want to follow it". The Union had filed so many grievances on the matter, that at one point we had over 76 in the systems. The process bogged down as the Company started to violate the language on what seemed like a daily basis. Recently, the Union and the Company engaged the services of Mr. Ready to act as a facilitator under 3.07(c) to help resolve 10 of these issues. From our side, it was pretty simple, nothing has changed in 28 years, other than every time the Company had challenged the Union's language, the decision reinforced the language even more. The only thing that has changed in the last few years was the management. Today we received the award, and well, it's a SIGNIFICANT win for the Union! We encourage all members to come to the membership meeting on Tuesday in Kamloops, at the regular times, 9:15AM, 630PM and 9:15PM, to have a more detailed discussion on the decision. See you there!
